Wood Varnishing Vancouver

Why Vancouver Wood Needs Varnish, Not Just Paint

Some wood is too good to paint. A solid fir front door, an oak staircase, exposed beams or a cedar deck deserve stain and varnish that show the grain instead of burying it. Done right, varnished wood is the warmest finish in the house.

Vancouver is hard on it, though. UV greys exposed wood and breaks down the finish on south-facing doors and decks. Rain swells and splits boards that lost their seal. Most failed varnish jobs come from the wrong product or skipping the re-coat before it was too far gone.

We match the finish to the wood and where it lives. Interior staircases and trim get a durable interior poly. Exterior doors and decks get a marine or spar varnish with UV blockers that flex with the wood through the wet season.

Front and interior doors, handrails and balusters, staircases, exposed beams and posts, mantels, decks, fences and exterior trim all welcome. Brushed and tipped for a deep, even, glass-smooth build.

What Wood Needs First

The Sanding and Sealing Wood Needs

Six steps that give varnish a clean, even surface to build on and keep it from peeling.

  • Sand back failed finish.Peeling, greyed or flaking varnish is sanded off. We do not topcoat over a failing finish, it just peels again with the new coat on top.
  • Repair splits and gouges.Cracks, dents and open joints get filled with a stainable filler so the finished surface reads smooth and the grain still shows.
  • Sand to a clean, even grain.Progressive sanding gets the wood uniform so stain takes evenly. Blotchy stain almost always traces back to uneven sanding.
  • Condition and stain. On blotch-prone woods like fir and pine we use a conditioner first, then apply stain to the colour you want, wiped even and consistent.
  • Seal coat.A sealer or thinned first coat locks the stain and raises the grain so we can knock it back smooth before the build coats.
  • Build coats of varnish. Two to three coats of the right varnish, sanded between coats, for a deep, even, durable finish that handles Vancouver moisture and UV.

Why Vancouver Owners Choose Us

Why Vancouver Owners Choose Us for Wood Varnishing

Right Finish for the Wood

Interior poly on stairs, marine varnish on exterior doors and decks. We match the product to the wood and the weather, not a one-can-fits-all.

UV Protection That Lasts

South-facing doors and decks fail from UV first. We build with UV-blocking finishes so the colour and seal hold through Vancouver summers.

Even Stain, No Blotch

Conditioning and progressive sanding give an even, consistent stain on fir, pine and oak. No dark patches or streaks.

Built Smooth, Coat by Coat

We sand between coats and tip the varnish out so the finish builds deep and glass-smooth, not thick and runny.

Low-Odour Interior Scheduling

Staircases and doors are everyday surfaces. We use low-odour systems and schedule so you can still use the home where possible.

5-Year Written Warranty

Our wood finishing is backed in writing for peeling and finish failure on the surfaces we prepped and coated.

Exterior wood needs a dry stretch to cure, so we book decks and doors April through October. Interior wood runs year-round.

Pro Tips From 6 Years of Vancouver Work

9 Vancouver Wood Varnishing Tips Worth Knowing

  1. UV kills exterior finish before water does. South-facing doors and decks fade and break down from sun first. A UV-blocking marine or spar varnish is what makes an exterior finish actually last.
  2. Recoat before it fails, not after. Varnish that is dulling but intact takes a quick maintenance coat. Once it peels and the wood greys, you are into a full strip and sand.
  3. Condition blotch-prone wood first. Fir and pine drink stain unevenly and go blotchy. A wood conditioner evens out absorption so the colour lays consistent.
  4. Sand between every coat. Varnish builds best when each coat is knocked back lightly before the next. Skipping it traps dust and leaves a rough finish.
  5. Decks need to dry before sealing. A washed cedar deck has to dry out for a couple of days. Sealing damp wood traps moisture and the finish clouds and peels.
  6. Satin hides wear better than gloss. High-gloss looks great day one but shows every scratch on stairs and floors. Satin keeps the warmth and ages far more gracefully.
  7. Front doors do best taken off or masked tight. A door finished in place needs careful masking and dry time. For the deepest finish we sometimes pull and finish flat, then rehang.
  8. Exterior wood is a dry-window job. Vancouver decks and doors need a dry stretch to cure. We watch the forecast and book around the rain instead of forcing a damp week.
  9. Stain colour shifts on different wood. The same stain looks lighter on oak and richer on fir. We sample on your actual wood before committing, never off a store chip.
Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between varnishing and painting wood? +

Paint covers the wood with solid colour. Varnish and stain are clear or tinted finishes that show the grain while protecting it. We recommend varnishing when the wood is worth showing off, a solid door, an oak staircase, exposed beams, and painting when the surface is laminate, damaged or you want a solid colour.

How long does exterior varnish last in Vancouver? +

On a south-facing door or deck, a UV-stable marine varnish typically holds 3 to 5 years before a maintenance coat, longer on sheltered north-facing wood. Vancouver UV and rain are the limiting factors. The key is recoating while the finish is still intact rather than waiting for it to peel and grey.

Can you fix a door that has gone grey and peeling? +

Yes. A weathered front door is one of our highest-impact jobs. We sand off the failed finish and greyed surface, repair any splits, re-stain to even out the colour, then build coats of UV-blocking varnish. The door comes back looking like new with protection rated for the elements.

Do you refinish staircases and handrails? +

Yes. Oak and fir stairs, treads, handrails and balusters are a common job. We use a traffic-grade interior finish that takes daily wear and can keep it from being slippery underfoot. We schedule with low-odour products so you can still move through the home where possible.

Can you stain and seal my cedar deck? +

Yes. We pressure-wash and brighten the deck, let it dry, then apply a penetrating UV-stable exterior stain or seal that flexes with the boards. Decks are weather-dependent, so we book them for a dry stretch April through October to let the finish cure properly.

Will the stain match my existing trim? +

We sample on your actual wood before committing, because the same stain reads differently on oak, fir and pine. That lets us match existing trim, doors or floors, or deliberately contrast. We never colour off a store chip alone, because real wood always shifts the tone.

Is varnishing messy or smelly indoors? +

We use low-odour finishing systems for interior wood and schedule the work so you can keep using the home where possible. Staircases and doors are everyday surfaces, so we plan coats and dry times around your routine rather than shutting the house down.

Is the finish guaranteed? +

Yes. Our 5-year written workmanship warranty covers peeling and finish failure on the wood we prepped and coated. Exterior wood in full sun is the hardest case, which is exactly why we build it with UV-blocking finishes rather than a basic clear coat.
