Why Metal Needs a Different Paint System in Vancouver
Metal is the hardest surface to paint in Vancouver and the one most painters get wrong. Wood forgives. Metal does not. Skip the rust treatment or the etch primer and the coating peels off in sheets inside a year, usually right where the rain pools.
Vancouver makes it worse. 1,200mm of rain in the city, salt in the air off English Bay and the North Shore inlets. Bare or chipped metal flash-rusts in days. Once rust creeps under old paint, a quick recoat just traps it and the bubbling spreads.
We treat the metal first. Wire-wheel or sand the rust back to bright metal, neutralize with a rust converter where needed, then prime with a real etch or DTM (direct-to-metal) primer so the topcoat actually bonds. Only then does colour go on.
Railings, gates, wrought-iron fences, aluminum handrails, steel fire escapes, metal doors, downpipes and gutters, garage doors and metal trim all get the same discipline. Two coats of DTM acrylic or alkyd, brushed or sprayed to suit the piece.

The Metal Prep We Bring on Day One
Six steps every Vancouver metal repaint needs before colour. Skip any one and the finish fails early.
-
De-rust to bright metal.Wire wheel, flap disc or sandpaper until active rust is gone. Surface rust left under paint keeps spreading. On heavy pitting we feather the edges so the topcoat lies flat.
-
Neutralize and convert.Where rust has eaten into the steel we apply a rust converter that turns iron oxide into a stable, paintable surface. Stops the rust clock before priming.
-
Degrease and wipe.Railings and gates carry hand oils, exhaust film and pollen. We wipe down with solvent so the primer grips clean metal, not grime.
-
Etch or DTM primer.Aluminum and galvanized need an etch primer or they shed paint in months. Steel gets a rust-inhibitive DTM primer. The primer is matched to the metal, not guessed.
-
Two coats of DTM topcoat.Direct-to-metal acrylic or alkyd, built for flex and weather. Two coats, proper recoat window, so the colour holds against UV and rain.
-
Mask hardware and surroundings.Hinges, locks, glass, brick and decking get masked. Clean lines, no overspray on your stonework or the neighbour’s car.

Why Vancouver Owners Choose Us for Metal Painting
Rust Treated, Not Painted Over
We take rust back to bright metal and convert what is left. We never just recoat over bubbling paint and hope. That is why our metal finishes last.
Right Primer for the Metal
Aluminum gets etch primer. Steel gets rust-inhibitive DTM. Galvanized gets the bonding system it needs. The primer is matched to the substrate every time.
Built for Vancouver Rain & Salt
Coastal salt air and constant rain are brutal on metal. We spec DTM coatings rated for the wet, not bargain enamel that flashes within a year.
Clean Lines on Detailed Iron
Scrollwork and pickets get hand-brushed so the detail stays crisp. No filled-in gaps, no drips, no sprayed-over hardware.
5-Year Written Warranty
Our metal work is backed in writing for peeling and adhesion failure on the coating. One local crew stands behind it.

9 Vancouver Metal Painting Tips Worth Knowing
- Rust always comes back through a quick recoat. Painting over active rust traps moisture. Within a year it bubbles and spreads. The metal has to go back to bright before primer, every time.
- Aluminum needs etch primer or it sheds paint. Smooth aluminum railings and gutters will not hold standard primer. An etch or self-etching primer bites into the surface so the topcoat stays put.
- Galvanized has to weather or be treated. Fresh galvanized steel rejects paint. Either let it weather a season or wipe it with a galvanized-metal etch before priming.
- Base posts rust first in Vancouver. Railing posts sit in standing water on decks and stairs. That is where failure starts. We give the bottom 6 inches extra prep and coating.
- Spray the flats, brush the details. Gates and fences look best sprayed on the wide bars and hand-brushed in the scrollwork. All-brush leaves marks, all-spray clogs the detail.
- Dark metal gets hot and chalks faster. South-facing black railings hit high surface temps. A quality DTM holds colour; cheap enamel chalks and fades within two summers.
- Caulk where metal meets wood or stucco. Railing flanges and gate posts bolted to the house leak at the joint. Sealing that seam keeps water out of the wall and off the metal.
- Two thin coats beat one heavy coat. Thick DTM sags and skins over before it cures underneath. Two thin coats with the right recoat window cure hard and last.
- Time exterior metal for a dry stretch. Vancouver metal painting needs 48 dry hours to cure. We watch the forecast and book around the rain rather than rushing a wet week.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does metal paint last in Vancouver? +
With proper rust treatment and a direct-to-metal system, expect 7 to 10 years on railings and gates before a refresh. South-facing and salt-exposed metal near the water fades a couple of years faster. The single biggest factor is the prep: metal that was de-rusted and etch-primed lasts far longer than a quick recoat.
Can you paint over rusty railings? +
Not directly. We remove active rust back to bright metal, treat any pitting with a rust converter, then prime. Painting straight over rust traps moisture and the coating bubbles within a year. The de-rust step is what makes the finish actually hold in Vancouver’s wet climate.
Do you paint aluminum and galvanized metal? +
Yes. Both need a specific approach. Aluminum gets an etch primer so paint can bite the smooth surface. Galvanized either needs to weather first or gets a galvanized-metal etch. We match the primer to the metal so it does not shed in a few months.
Can you match my existing railing colour? +
Yes. We colour-match to your existing railings, trim or fence so a repaint blends with the rest of the house. Most Vancouver homes want a satin or semi-gloss black, bronze or charcoal, and we carry direct-to-metal versions of all of them.
Do you paint metal on site or in your shop? +
Both. Fixed items like deck railings, fences and fire escapes are done on site with full masking. Removable pieces such as gates, light fixtures and small metal furniture can come to the shop for a controlled sprayed finish, then go back up.
What is the best time of year for exterior metal in Vancouver? +
April through October. Direct-to-metal coatings need roughly 48 dry hours to cure, and Vancouver’s wet season does not give that reliably. We schedule exterior metal around dry stretches and keep removable shop work going year-round.
Will you paint commercial and strata metal railings? +
Yes. We handle strata balcony railings, common-area handrails, fire escapes and structural steel for commercial buildings. We are fully insured, work around tenant schedules and can phase larger railing jobs floor by floor.
Is the metal work covered by warranty? +
Yes. Our 5-year written workmanship warranty covers peeling and adhesion failure on the coating we applied. It does not cover the metal rusting through from the inside, which is a fabrication issue, not a paint issue, but the coating itself is guaranteed.
