Spray Finish vs Brush-and-Roll

Brush-and-roll leaves texture. On a wall thats fine – sometimes preferred. On cabinets, doors, and trim its a tell-tale of amateur work. Modern kitchen and trim work needs spray finish.

We run HVLP (high-volume low-pressure) for fine work and airless for fences, exterior trim, and large surfaces. HVLP wastes less paint, lays a finer coat, controls overspray. Airless covers fast on big surfaces.

For cabinets we remove doors and drawer fronts, spray them in our off-site spray booth, then re-hang. Cabinet boxes get on-site spray with controlled containment (plastic + drop-cloth + booth-pole). 3-5 day timeline for typical kitchen.

For exterior fences and outdoor furniture we spray on-site with windscreens. For interior doors we typically remove and spray off-site for fastest reoccupy.

What Spray Finish Needs

What Spray Finish Needs to Look Right

Spray finish that looks like factory needs the right prep, the right pressure, the right viscosity, the right gun. Six things that separate spray jobs from rolled jobs.

  • Sand smooth before spray.Spray finish is unforgiving – every imperfection shows. 220 grit sand on cabinets and doors. Brush-roll prep wont cut it for spray spec.
  • Adhesion primer on every glossy surface.Old varnish, old oil paint, lacquer all need Stix adhesion primer before topcoat. Spray spec needs Stix or BIN.
  • HVLP for fine work, airless for large.Cabinets, doors, trim = HVLP. Fences, exterior siding, large surfaces = airless. Wrong gun choice causes orange-peel finish.
  • Thin paint to spec for the gun.Spray paint is usually thinned 10-15% with water (latex) or solvent (oil). Manufacturer spec varies. Wrong viscosity sags or splatters.
  • Two thin coats, light sand between.Spray spec is two coats minimum. Light scuff sand between coats for adhesion. Same approach as factory cabinet finish.
  • Containment for on-site spray.Spray drift travels 30+ feet. Plastic walls + drop-cloths + booth-pole containment for kitchen cabinet box spray. Garage spray gets full plastic enclosure.

Why Vancouver Owners Choose Us for Spray

Why Vancouver Owners Choose Us for Spray Finish

Off-Site Spray Booth

Cabinet doors, drawer fronts, interior doors all spray off-site in our controlled booth. Dust-free environment, climate controlled, factory-grade finish. Saves your kitchen from overspray.

HVLP for Fine, Airless for Large

Right gun for the surface. HVLP gives finest finish on cabinets and doors. Airless covers fences and exterior fast. Wrong gun = orange-peel or sag.

Cabinet Coat & Advance

Waterborne acrylic alkyd hybrid. Cures hard like oil. Blocks well after drying. Stays low-VOC. Spec-grade for cabinet refinishing.

Door Re-Hang Precision

Every hinge labelled, every door numbered. Re-hang fits original gaps within 1mm. No re-mortising required.

On-Site Containment Standard

Plastic walls, booth-pole, floor protection, HEPA-filtered ventilation. Cabinet box spray in your kitchen does not coat the rest of your home.

Pre-Paint vs Post-Paint Coordination

For renos: we spray trim before drywall paint, masks walls, sharp transition. For refresh: we spray after walls. Both approaches available depending on scope.

Pro Tips From 6 Years of Vancouver Spray Finishing

9 Spray Painting Tips Worth Knowing

  1. Spray finish needs 220-grit sand. Brush-roll doesnt. Spray is unforgiving – every scratch shows. Brush-roll hides texture in the roll pattern.
  2. Cabinet Coat or Advance for kitchen, not regular latex. Regular latex stays soft and prints. Acrylic alkyd hybrid cures hard but stays low-VOC.
  3. HVLP for fine work, airless for big surfaces. HVLP wastes 60% less paint, lays fine finish. Airless covers fast but coarser. Right gun for right job.
  4. Stix primer on every shiny surface. Old varnish, old oil, old lacquer all need adhesion primer before spray topcoat. Wont stick otherwise.
  5. Two thin coats beat one thick. Thick spray sags and orange-peels. Two thin coats with 4-hour recoat is the spec.
  6. Off-site spray booth is the right answer for doors. Climate-controlled dust-free booth gives factory finish. On-site never matches the finish quality unless you have a $20k spray room.
  7. Containment travels 30 feet from the gun. Spray drift coats anything within 30 feet. Plastic walls, drop-cloths, booth-pole. No shortcuts.
  8. Spray takes longer than you think. Setup and breakdown take 50% of total time. Actual spray is fast, but masking, containment, ventilation, sand-between-coats is slow.
  9. Furniture-grade finish needs three coats and wet-sand. Bookcases, vanities, custom millwork – three coats with light wet-sand between for piano-grade smoothness.
Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does cabinet spray painting cost in Vancouver? +

Kitchen 30 doors + 10 drawers on-site box: $2,800-$4,800. Full kitchen 50 doors + 15 drawers + box: $4,400-$6,800. Pricing depends on door count, complexity (raised panel vs flat), removal access, and colour change vs same-tone refresh.

How long does cabinet spray painting take? +

3-5 days for typical kitchen on-site box + off-site door spray. Day 1: remove doors, sand, prime. Day 2-3: spray doors off-site (cure 24h between coats). Day 4: spray boxes on-site. Day 5: re-hang.

Whats the difference between HVLP and airless spray? +

HVLP (high-volume low-pressure) wastes 60% less paint, lays finer finish, slower. Airless higher pressure, covers fast, coarser finish. We use HVLP on cabinets and doors, airless on fences and large surfaces.

Can you spray paint over my existing cabinet finish? +

Yes if existing finish is sound. Sand smooth, Stix adhesion primer, two-coat Cabinet Coat or Advance topcoat. If existing finish is failing or peeling, we strip first. Test patch at quote.

Do you take the doors off-site or spray everything in my kitchen? +

Doors and drawer fronts off-site in our spray booth – factory finish quality. Cabinet boxes stay in your kitchen with plastic containment. Combination approach gives best results in shortest timeline.

Will spray painting smell up my house? +

Cabinet Coat and Advance are low-VOC. Same odour profile as standard latex paint. Open windows and run ventilation during application. Off-site door spray doesnt smell up your house at all.

Can you spray paint over wood grain so its smooth? +

Partially. Oak grain shows through latex topcoat. To fully fill grain we use Aqua Coat grain filler before primer. Adds 1-2 days. For natural wood grain hide on oak: 3 coats grain filler, then 2 coats primer, then 2 coats topcoat.

What colour options are best for sprayed cabinets? +

White Dove and Simply White stay clean over time. Pure White and Decorator White photograph cleanest. Greys like Edgecomb Gray and Pale Oak are warm-neutral. Deep colours (navy, charcoal, forest green) show every bump.

Can you spray paint fences and outdoor furniture? +

Yes. Airless spray with windscreen containment on-site. Picket, slat, and lattice fences. Outdoor furniture (Adirondack chairs, tables). Penetrating stain or solid colour, both available. Same-day on small fences.
